International Driving Permit: How it Works
It's me Mario! Actually, it's Princess Peach! When I tell you the Mario Kart experience in Tokyo, Japan was hands down one of the most incredible experiences EVER, she tells no lies! I bet you're wondering about the details of it all...It would have not been possible without an international driving permit. Sounds complicated, but it wasn't at all.
There are two companies in the United States that issue international driving permits: The American Automobile Association (AAA) and American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). I decided to go with AAA. All you have to do is the following:
1. Fill out the application.
I got the impression you need to have an international trip booked to apply
2. Take two passport photos.
I shared in a previous blog post that I found an app that allowed us to take them with our phones. I then printed them on photo paper, cut them out, and brought them with me to the AAA office. The AAA office that issued my permit had the equipment to take the photos too.
3. Find a local office.
The office will need the application and two passport photos along with your passport, drivers license, and $20 fee.
Voilà, they fill out everything on their end and you get to walk out of the office with your permit. Whoomp! There it is!
